On Alabaster Base. This beautiful marble bust of Angelica Maria gives us a worldly sensuality united with sweetly pious virtue and appealing simple beauty. This bust named Angelica Maria is a reproduction of the painting of Madonna by Fra Filippo Lippi.Filippo Lippi used Sister Lucrezia Buti as his model for the Madonna paintings. So this sculpture of Angelica Maria is actually Sister Lucrezia Buti, later Filippo Lippi's wife. Angelica Maria (Sister Lucrezia Buti)Fra is Italian for "brother" - Brother Filippo Lippi was a monk and artist in the 15th century. He met Sister Lucrezia Buti, and asked her to pose for a painting of the Madonna. The two fell in love and ran off together and had a son. The Pope released them from their vows so they could marry.Filippo Lippi was placed by his widowed mother in the monastery of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence, where he received training as a painter and took religious vows as a monk in 1421, becoming Fra Filippo Lippi. His early works were highly influenced by the earlier Florentine master Masaccio. After 1440, Fra Filippo abandoned Masaccio's style in favor of a more decorative style such as the Gothic use of fluttering draperies, attenuated figures, and glowing colors. Fra Filippo carried a strong influence on later Florentine art. Filippo had a great influence on Sandro Botticelli and Castagnola. This style of his Gothic settings can be seen in Leonardo da Vinci's Madonna of the Rocks. This bust of Angelica Maria represents a love story between Fra Filippo Lippi and Sister Lucrezia Buti, later to become Filippo and Lucrezia Lippi. He died in Spoleto on October 9, 1469.
