These two Greek Warriors from Riace are powerful and magnificent statues.The discovery of these Greek warrior bronze statues is said to be one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of art treasures during this century. Even our modern day warriors will appreciate the natural strength and power of these Warriors from Riace. It all started when an Italian scuba diver was diving 300 meters off the Calabrian coast near the village of Riace on August 1972. He saw a hand and partial arm sticking out of the sand. He surfaced, then dove again, with trepidation, touched the hand and realized it was bronze. The Greek warrior bronze statues were raised a couple of days later. Experts dated these Greek warriors from Riace around the period of the Golden Age or about the fifth century BC. This was during the time of Phidias, the renown sculptor, and many feel he may have sculpted these beautiful Greek warriors. The originals stood over six feet tall. It is thought these Greek warrior bronze statues found their watery grave around 250 BC to 150 BC when being shipped from Greece to Rome. However, there is no signs that the ship went down, but there were other artifacts in the area. The guess is a violent storm forced the crew to throw the greek warrior bronze statues and other items over the side to save the ship. Apparently their are missing pieces, the helmet of greek warrior B and both their shields and spears, possibly left in the holds of the ship. The bearing and authority of greek warrior A indicates he may have been the leader. Also, even though they look similar, greek warrior B has been sculpted with a slightly changed style. The anatomy is so accurate and the depiction so carefully rendered that the blood may be felt to pulse through the clearly visible veins. The greatness of these two statues extends beyond the realm of realism. These two bronze statues of the Greek warriors presents their beauty combining the ideals of Greece in its noblest period, they are god-like, athletic, and heroic, and their attitude of defiance represents the moral force of the people they symbolize.
