Houdon's portrayal of Alexandre Brogniart captures a child's look of wide-eyed wonder and reverie, it's an unforgettable impression.Alexandre was born in 1770. Alexandre became a very well known geologist and director of the royal porcelain factory at Sevre in his later years.Houdon was a close intimate friend of the father of Alexandre and Louise. Their father was a distinguished French architect. When the statues of Alexandre Brogniart (Brohn-yahr) and his sister Louise were acquired by the Louvre, Andre Michel wrote, "I do not think that the master has ever modeled anything more simple and more delicate, ever caressed the human form in it flower with a hand more knowing and more tender."The children, Alexandre and Louise, sculpted by Houdon are definite personalities. They have their own thoughts, their own virtue. His talent was marvelous in its capacity for portraying the innocence and freshness of childhood with sentimentality.Alexandre's sister, Louise seems to listen intently to some unseen speaker with her head lifted and gazing beyond the spectator. These two sculptures make a harmonious pair.
