Greek God of Health. This captivating marble head of Goddess Hygeia, the Greek Goddess of Health is mounted on a walnut base.Hygeia mythology refers to her as the daughter of Asclepios, the god of medicine. Like Asclepios, Goddess Hygeia was not one of the original deities of Greek Mythology.Today, you will see sculptures of the goddess of health and the god of medicine in medical facilities throughout the world. Goddess Hygeia is considered a minor goddess in Greek mythology. Today Hygeia (hi-je-a) is considered the goddess of health. Even the name is rooted in the word hygiene, health personified. Goddess Hygeia also holds a strong relationship to women's health by many. The worship of the goddess of health probably started in the fourth century BC at Epidauros in association with the great temple to Asclepios that was bringing thousands of infirm people to that city for medical assistance. The beautiful marble head from which the reproduction was made is thought to have been the work of Skopas, one of the three greatest sculptors of the fourth century BC. It probably belonged to a statue which stood in the temple of Athena Alea at Tegea in the Peloponnese.
