Full Figure Of Zeus (also called Poseidon--460-450B.C.) National Museum, Athens The massive male figure with arms extended is one of the most popular statues in The National Museum in Athens. The museum still refers to the statue as a representation of Poseidon, god of the sea. That identification is now questioned. Whether it is Poseidon or Zeus, it is one of the greatest bronze statues of the fifth century B.C. The balance of evidence tilts toward Zeus, the chief of the Olympian gods, and this has come to be accepted by the majority of archaeologists. The stance of the full figure is a stylized position to be seen in other Greek statues of Zeus and Athena and to a lesser extent Poseidon when they are represented as defenders. At this period, following the defeat of the invading Persians, the Greeks gave their deepest gratitude to Zeus for his help in their defense. The massive temple to his honor at Olympia was constructed contemporaneously with the fashioning of this statue. Although the object held in the right hand has been lost it is conjectured that it was a short cylindrical thunderbolt being hurled by the retracted arm.
