A Youthful Winner (4th century B.C.) The Vatican Museum, Rome The band crowning the head of the handsome youth indicates that he was an athlete from the palaistra, a winner in the games. Athlete games were held not only at Olympia but in Delphi, Argolis, and Corinth every two years. Athletes competed as individuals rather than in teams but their victory brought glory to the city which they represented. People came to the games from all parts of Greece to sleep in tents or under the open sky. The games had the atmosphere of a great fair; leaders discussed politics, artists and poets came to entertain and sell their creations, vendors sold food and wine and the games went on with contests in running, jumping, wrestling, throwing, racing, and boxing. The athletes were esteemed and crowning wreaths of victory were placed on the heads of the winners. The statue is thought to be a Roman copy of an original from the classic age of Greece.
