The Water Nymphs ( Les Naiades ) by Jean Goujon (16th century) The Italian Renaissance had reached it's peak by the middle of the sixteenth century and it's effect had spread to France. The Water Nymphs carved by Jean Goujon in 1549 for The Fountain of the Innocents was one of the first French pieces to reveal the new trend. The classical Greek style which had inspired much of the Renaissance in Italy is perceptible in the naturalism of the clinging garments and the revealing of the beautiful sinuous bodies beneath the folds. Motivation for the clinging of the garments was provided by the action of the Naiades pouring water from jugs. Although there is indebtedness to the Italians, the figures are also characteristically French in their aristocratic decorative style. The Nymphs in a classical architectural setting surmount the gushing waters of The Fountain of the Innocents in a square that is enlivened by gaiety.
