Spanish Dancer by Degas Musee d'Orsay, Paris. Although Degas is principally known as a painter, sculpturing was almost as important in his life.He began seriously to sculpt when he was in his early forties and, although had no thought of exhibiting most of his sculpture, his modeling increasingly became a major part of his work. At the time of his death his studio contained more than one-hundred and fifty wax models which hew had made of dancing girls, race horses and women working or bathing. With failing eyesight, sculpting became his principal medium of expression at the end of his career. In much of his painting and all of his sculpting Degas was principally concerned with capturing movement and position. His ability to depict that movement and to capture its essence in a body position is to be seen in this statuette of a flamenco dancer. The colorful costume has been omitted in order to reveal the skeletal and muscular structure of the dancer. Edgar Degas (1834-1917) - "He loved the human body for what it is; plus movement." The French poet Baudelaire wrote these words; they perfectly fit either Rodin or Degas. Rodin was a sculptor who occasionally turned to painting. Bothe of these artist had a lifelong fascination with the expressiveness of the human body and its movements. Rodin preferred to catch his models in the ordinary activities of daily life. Degas analyzed the movement and captured it in his painting and sculpture. His subjects were often the ballet girls at the opera.
