The Stele of Hegeso - (410 B.C.)Some of the most beautiful sculpture of ancient Greece is to be found on remaining grave stones or funereal stelae of the fourth and fifth centuries B.C.One of the loveliest is the stele named for the woman in whose memory it was carved. Hegeso, in an idealized portrait, is looking at her jewels held by the maid who stands before her. It is an incident that might have occurred at any time in her daily life. There is no suggestion that life has come to an end; the is no reference to death. On some grave stelae the deceased may be seen saying farewell to friends or family but there is never a display of grief or sentimentality. Greeks concerned themselves much more with the life that they understood very well than with the great void of non understandable death. The carving of the draperies is typical of the finest sculpture of the late fifth century. The light clinging material falls gracefully in tiny folds revealing the body beneath the garment. The basic design is magnificent. The jewel box at the center links the extended arms of the two women. The lower part of their legs repeats the front curve of the chair and all elements of the design are held together by the reversed S formed by the back of the chair including its leg. That curve is place in front of the architectural framing of the stele, thereby strengthening the design and increasing the three-dimensional illusion. It is an exquisite touch of pure artistry!
