True Love This contemporary statue was inspired by the Cyclades. Paul Gaugin and Pablo Picasso looked to so-called "primitive art" for new means of expression. Cezanne influenced others by his efforts to reduce that which he saw to basic forms. Amedeo Modigliani and Constantin Brancusi were obviously influenced by those stone carvers who millenniums before them carved and polished the marble figures found on the Cycladic Islands. 13.5" high in Bonded Stone on a marble base. Shown in New Stone. The Art of the Cyclades-Contemporary décor created 4500 years ago. A legend tells us that after creating Greece, God was left with a handful of rocks which he threw into the Aegean Sea. He called those rocks the Cycladic Islands. More than four thousand years ago the inhabitants of those island fashioned marble statues with breathtaking simplicity of design. They delight our modern eye and have any uncanny resemblance to contemporary design. It has been pointed out that it takes great sureness on the part of an artist to simplify, to eliminate and yet to retain the essential, the basic form. Henry Moore, admired for his mastery of form for the sake of form, said "I love and admire cycladic sculpture. I have such great elemental simplicity."
