This bronze patina bust of composer Mahler was sculptured by Rodin giving insight into the character of Gustav Mahler.Mahler sat for the portrait in Rodin's studio in 1909, but left before it was completed.A perfect choice for any composer, conductor or lover of opera and song.Gustav Mahler traveled throughout Europe searching for a compatible place to work, only to end his career in New York. More About Composer Gustav Mahler -Gustav started his piano and theory lessons in 1860 in Jihlava. At the Vienna Conservatory, Mahler studied the piano, harmony and composition. Gustav Mahler first worked as a music teacher. During this time Mahler composed Das klagende Lied.In 1880 Mahler accepted his first conductors position, however, as in many other positions offer him throughout Europe, Gustav found the position either restraining or he had incompatibility problems with his employers. It was in Prague that Mahler had the opportunity of conducting operas by Gluck, Mozart, Beethoven and Wagner. His next break came in 1887 when Arthur Nikisch became ill, Mahler took over and was able to apply his only interpretations, which established his genius among critics and the public. Mahler conducted in Leipzig, ,Prague, ,Budapest, Hamburg, Berlin and Vienna to mention a few. Gustav Mahler main obstacle was his Jewish origins. Gustav even went so far as to accepted Catholic baptism in February 1897 to help get appointments. In Vienna, Mahler revived a failing opera house back to a brilliant success. Gustav spent his summers composing at his villa on the Wörthersee in Carinthia. It was the anti-semitic press which gained momentum that evenually forced Mahler to make the decision to leave Europe and move to New York, where he conducted the Metropolitan Opera and then the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Gustav did spend some summers back in Europe conducting and composing until his death. Mahler Gustav was born in Kaliste, Bohemia July 7, 1860 and died in Vienna on May 18, 1911.
